University Honors incubates leaders and catalyzes service – at KU and well beyond. Faculty and students from every discipline come together here, collaborate, and experiment to address societal needs that mean the most to them.
Honors is the future of personalized education. Faculty get to know students well, help them define the change they want to make in the world, then help them do it.
KU’s University Honors Program is a critical element of our strategy to attract some of Kansas and the nation’s brightest and most determined students to enrich our campus community. We hear every week from students who were admitted to the nation’s top programs and choose to stay here for unique opportunities and challenges.
Once part of the program, students are connected to faculty and to each other, through small classes on compelling subjects that draw disciplines together. And every one of them engages in learning outside the classroom that makes an impact on our campus, in Lawrence, and beyond.
Recently, students worked with Friends of the Kaw on water and riparian habitat challenges in Kansas. As part of their project, they learned of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals. They decided to apply as Fellow in order to bring a semester-long leadership development program to KU to “take social impact to the next level.” But application required institutional membership – typically a slow and cumbersome process. Honors acted nimbly – they achieved membership in record time and made this invaluable experience possible, for these individual students and for KU.
Honors provides an incubator for programs, too. Freshman Seminar, Common Book, intensive advising – all found their start in Honors and today are deployed campus-wide to make KU a more welcoming, connected place where all students have the conditions they need to thrive.
Your investment in the KU Honors Program will support exceptional students, give our top faculty the inspiration and connection that keep them engaged, and nurture innovation on campus.
Join us in launching leaders who enrich our campus community and go on to catalyze meaningful change in Kansas and around the world.
Honors does not have a permanent faculty like departments do. We “borrow” the very best from every discipline. This keeps us relevant, engaged, experimental – but it is precarious. Your investment will help us to recruit and support deeply dedicated faculty fellows who inspire our students and create programs and curricula that change our campus community for the much better.
Students and alumni alike tell us that study abroad is as life and world changing as any experience they have on campus. But due to double majors and demanding curricula, as well as limited budgets, many of our students cannot fit a semester or even summer away into their degree plans. Your investment will help us to develop short, focused, faculty-led experiences abroad – equally life-changing but more affordable in every way.
Too many students leave KU due to relatively small financial emergencies – for example, $500 for car repair that prevents attendance, $600 for rent because illness prevented part-time work. Your investment in our student emergency fund will enable more to stay in school when hardship hits – earn their degree and go on to make our university and our world ever better.
