The University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications is at the forefront of the communication evolution, ensuring our students graduate with the skills and values essential to thrive in today’s ever-changing digital world. Our students and researchers contribute across various realms such as securing personal information in the digital age, reporting in news deserts and assisting readers in identifying misinformation.
From the moment they step on the KU campus, JMC-school students have the opportunity to work as budding journalists, whether at The University Daily Kansan, The Agency, KUJH-TV, or Media Crossroads. While you may think of journalists as those you see on the news or the writers who are responsible for the newspaper, magazine or social media posts you read, the reality is our journalists are everywhere. Yes, some work in traditional newsrooms but many work in places you’d never think of–NASA, the White House, to name a few.
A journalism degree from KU means more—more than words on paper, more than images on a screen. Our graduates simply learn more so they have more—more knowledge of today’s technology, more experience in producing content, and more opportunities to land a job that makes a difference.
By supporting our desire to offer more student scholarships, more experiential learning and more ways to enhance our research productivity, you will make it possible for us to continue producing relevant media content that informs, entertains and inspires our readers and viewers. More than that, you will ensure our democracy thrives for decades to come.
Now is the time to make a transformative gift to the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications to address the following priorities:
Many of our students face financial barriers, and scholarship funds enable students to obtain an education they may not have access to otherwise. We are proud that 93% of JMC-School students who apply receive at least one scholarship. Our top priority is ensuring our students can graduate and achieve their highest professional aspirations. We encourage our students to supplement their classroom learning through a variety of extracurricular experiences, including study abroad, internships and student media.
Our faculty and students work with populations that have traditionally been left out of the digital space, including women who are seeking new computer literacy skills to better their chances at economic prosperity and self-sufficiency and rural communities that are considered “news deserts,” areas that lack a source of credible, local information due to the shutdown of previous publications. Through these programs, the JMC-School creates opportunities and connections that keep citizens informed about the issues that affect their everyday lives.
The School depends on continuity and excellence of faculty and staff who are constantly reshaping our curriculum to ensure it is reliant and current. These are the people who will shape tomorrow’s media practitioners, serving not just as educators but mentors. You can make a difference for thousands of students for years to come by supporting our faculty.
