Help position our school to train nursing professionals, achieve scientific breakthroughs, and ultimately, improve and save lives.
Nurses are the backbone of our health care system. They represent the largest segment of the health care workforce by far and have the most significant direct impact on patient care. With Kansas and the nation facing a critical nursing shortage, your support of nursing programs is essential. Under the leadership of Dean Jean Foret Giddens, PhD, FAAN, the School of Nursing wants to be part of turning around the nursing shortage affecting the state and the nation.
With your support, KU’s School of Nursing is ready to meet the challenges ahead. Through our nationally ranked academic programs, we are preparing top talent for roles as nursing clinicians, practitioners, educators and health care leaders. Our faculty members like Karen Weis conduct research that will have life-changing results in patient care. Through the Kansas Nursing Workforce Center at the KU School of Nursing, we have taken a leading role in ensuring Kansans will have access to nurses when and where they need them. Our campuses in Kansas City and Salina make excellent nursing education accessible to more students.
Now is the time to make a transformative gift to the School of Nursing to address the following priorities:
More nurses are needed, and scholarships are key to attracting talent to the nursing workforce. More than two-thirds of nursing students have documented financial need, yet less than half receive scholarships. Of those who do receive scholarships, the average award amount represents less than 30% of program costs. Without additional scholarships, these students may postpone their college plans, leave college without completing their degrees or choose alternative career paths.
Broad collaboration from across the state and the healthcare industry is required to solve our nursing sustainability issues. The Kansas Nursing Workforce Center brings together stakeholders with the information needed to address the systemic issues contributing to the chronic nursing shortage. The Center’s annual State of Nursing in Kansas report provides credible, usable information to those making decisions and creating policies to educate, retain and sustain the nursing workforce.
